In conjunction with my current shared exhibition Memory and Place with Erin Singleton, on Friday 1st of February I was invited to come in and work with two groups of children at Bampton Primary School. The children and staff were fantastic and we had an exciting creative day. Together we explored memory and place through the use of recycled boxes and other materials that were made into little memory houses.

Last year Obsidian Art as part of World Book Night invited artists to respond to Carol Ann Duffy’s anthology of poems, “The World’s Wife”. I am one of over 50 artists in this selling exhibition taking place from the 13th April – 29th, 2012 at Obsidian Art in Stoke Mandeville, UK.

Here’s my newly finished piece titled “The World’s Wife” inspired by the anthology as a whole whilst focusing on the poem Penelope. Using an old writing slope as a base and an old pen to symbolise Duffy the writer, the exterior is collaged in a small repeat of an old World Tour game cover with an image of the world as a walking man. Duffy effectively is the world’s wife coming out of the box surrounded by Mr World – the husband. The artwork itself is a rich tapestry of symbols (the dog Argos, a needle and thread, a whistle, a thimble and two marriage rings and more)related to the story of Odysseus who was Penelope’s husband.

Go for it and write some words or read. Since I will be going to Vienna in April for the Society For Art Of Imagination Exhibition at the Phantasten Museum of Wien, here’s a short poem courtesy of Mr Edward Lear:

There was an Old Man of Vienna,

Who lived upon Tincture of Senna;

When that did not agree, he took Camomile Tea,

That nasty Old Man of Vienna.

Other exciting news is that my assemblage Swell To Great is going to be in the upcoming ‘Society For Art Of Imagination Exhibition’ to be held at The Museum of Fantastic Art in Vienna (Phantasten Museum Wien) located inside the historic Palais Palffy at the centre of the Austrian capital. The show runs from 14th – 28th of April. The opening is on the 14th from 11am – 1pm and there is the first ever International Conference on the Future of Fantastic and Visionary Art whereby I am the Conference Director. I’ll keep you posted on the speakers etc.

I will be in Vienna from the 12th – 18th April. I’m very excited about the exhibition and meeting a new member of the society from Turkey, Can Göknil.
